Society Hill Real Estate

Society Hill is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania between 2nd Street and Washington Square Park on 5th Street. Situated on the Delaware River, this waterfront neighborhood is filled with history and excitement. The Free Society of Traders in the 1680s, a stock trading company associated with Pennsylvania founder William Penn founded the Society Hill area. Many federal government employees lived in the newly renovated homes in this neighborhood when Philadelphia served as the nation's capital. As you can see, even then the real estate in Society Hill was flourishing. Buyers can now choose from all housing styles including brand new state-of-the-art apartment complexes, old two-story homes, and refurbished condominium high rises. Although Society Hill is in a large city, it has a very residential feel and is in close proximity to the restaurant scene along Market and Chestnut Streets. In addition, the business district is only a short bus or taxi ride away. Most live in single-family homes or rent brownstone homes, however high rise condominiums are available in the historic district. Society Hill is filled with hidden alleys and winding walkways resulting from land grabbing in its early years. Many love to leisurely explore this area, observing the magnificent architecture and beautiful waterfront view. Buildings open to the public include the Powel House and the Hill-Physick-Keith House also known as the Physick House. Built in 1765, the Powel House was owned by first mayor of Philadelphia after the United States declared its independence from Britain. In addition, Dr. Philip Syng Physick, the Father of American Surgery, occupied the Physick House from 1815 to 1837. Because of these buildings and many others, Society Hill is a wonderful place to live, especially for those who appreciate and love American history.
